A YOUTH football coach from Stewkley has won Aylesbury Vale District Council's prestigious Volunteer of the Year award for outstanding community work.
Dave Garrard of St Michael's Close, Stewkley, received his award from Chairman of the Council, Cllr Netta Glover last Tuesday at the Gateway offices in Aylesbury.
The annual awards scheme, now in its ninth year, was launched by the council to find people in the community who go the extra mile to help others. They are nominated by members of the public and the final judging is made by a cross-party panel of councillors.
Unsung Hero Dave has been running youth football training in Stewkley for more than 30 years. He coaches the youngsters every Saturday morning during the season and personally provides all the training equipment. But it isn't a team as such because Dave teaches youngsters from five to 16, of all abilities, the skills of the game in a fun way rather than in a competitive fashion.
Councillor Janet Blake, who represents the Stewkley ward, wrote to AVDC to support Mr Garrard's nomination. She said: "Dave Garrard is highly respected in the local community for his commitment to providing football training to youngsters, many of whom have gone on to play for Stewkley Football Club. In this way, he has been an enormous help to maintaining the existence of the club."
Councillor Pam Pearce, Cabinet Member for Community Matters, said: "There are many people in this district who work tirelessly for the benefit of their community, and with no thought of financial reward. The awards scheme is a way we can recognise their efforts and pay tribute to the tremendous work they do for others. They really are our local heroes."
Dave shares the title with Bob Still of Bowling Alley, Oving.
On his achievement, Dave said: "I am delighted to win the award it's really good for the group. Actually I'm quite embarrassed because I'm sure there are lots of other people out there that do more worthwhile things!
"What I do is unique. I believe youngsters should learn the skills of this wonderful game rather than play in a competitive team at first. I have encouraged families along over the years and we have never cancelled a Saturday due to the weather!"
