Expect months of delays.
WORK on the Leighton traffic improvement scheme was due to start today (Tuesday) with drivers facing five months of disruption and delays.
The scheme, which is scheduled to take up to 20 weeks to complete, involves replacing the majority of traffic lights in the town with roundabouts and zebra crossings. A 20-mph zone will also be introduced.
The major improvements will run from Old Road, Linslade, to Leston Road, Leighton.
Beds County Council planners say that removing the traffic lights at junctions should reduce the amount of time drivers are kept waiting at red lights which, in turn, will help traffic flow along the roads.
County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Cllr Tom Wootton, said: "This innovative scheme should make a real difference to the town centre and will help ease traffic congestion.
"It is great news that this scheme is starting and we hope that local residents are looking forward to the end result.
"Delays are expected whilst the works are being carried out, and we ask motorists to bear with us during this period.
"We would like to thank everyone in advance for their patience."
The job is not expected to affect trade and people will be able to access the shops in the town centre which will be open as normal whilst the work is being carried out.
The council's highways engineers will be working hard to complete as much of the work as possible before the beginning of December so as to avoid disruption to Christmas shopping. All work will be suspended during December.
